Free Dinner Date for Spartan Youth Radio Fans

Five years ago, a ragtag group of Espanola High School students and teacher Jayson Stewart, began laying the foundation for Spartan Youth Radio, an extracurricular club for radio fans at the school, students who wanted to share their thoughts on local events, to report on school activities and to play their favourite music.

Now, half a decade later, the little club has grown in size, scope, technology and influence.  Touted as Canada's only high school podcast…

The Tech March

We live in an age where the only thing that separates us from the animals is the ability to drive, communicate in the blink of an eye, and our oh-so-lovely opposable thumbs. We march onward into the next big thing in technology, from the wheel to space travel to the sweet, sweet wonders of microwaveable pizza. And we still continue. Now bring a steampunk enthusiast, I have a love for all things old and Victorian, but I still have plenty of love left over the next big thing. Unfortunately, we…

Will There Be a Heroes Movie?

by Jayson Stewart

About a year ago my wife and I decided to cancel our satellite television as a knee-jerk reaction to the amount of boob tube we and our young son were consuming.  We kept finding him catching glimpses of violent cartoons and consumeristic advertising and said enough was enough.  We needed to disconnect with television and reconnect with each…

All Kinds of Different: A Half Decade of Spartan Youth Radio

by Jayson Stewart

originally published in the Midnorth Monitor

Wednesday, October 13th, 2010

Five years ago, after this reporter moved to the area and started teaching at Espanola High School, I asked one of my classes if they thought a podcast radio station would succeed in the area. Not one of the students felt that there would be enough of an interest to start such an endeavour much less keep it going but, if you know me well you quickly realize that I seldom back down… Continue

I'm still a member!!!

I remember when every one came up to my new school (Sudbury Secondary School) to watch the film festival, and we interviewed that lady that made the movie on her Grandma and her Metis Status, and Mr. Stew said "Interviewing today is former SYR member..."

I'm still a member! I support our cause! I wear the t-shirt! Heck, I even beat William to the third episode of the 8 bit chipper channel! Rahhhh!

I think I'm more of an off-site member than not a member... Please accept… Continue

Winnipeg is the True Heart of Canadian Music: the Weakerthans

WINNIPEG IS THE TRUE HEART OF CANADIAN MUSIC: THE WEAKERTHANS

by Jayson Stewart and Kris Dickson

Toronto may be the brain of the Canadian music industry but there is no denying that Winnipeg is its heart. Joining ‘peggers Neil Young, The Guess Who and Chantal Kreviazuk, post-punk indie rock pop band The Weakerthans have been racking up awards and fan accolades for almost fifteen years.

In 2005, Chart Magazine listed The Weakerthans Left and Leaving as one of…

Mother Mother: Canadian Band Defies Label

MOTHER MOTHER: CANADIAN BAND DEFIES LABEL

by Jayson Stewart and Madeline Lemire of Spartan Youth Radio

Indie rock is as easy a musical genre to define as asking a beachcomber to describe the basic shape of driftwood. It is varied and ever-changing but Spartan Youth Radio reporter Madeline Lemire tried her best when speaking to Ryan Guldemond, vocalist and guitarist for the Vancouver-based band Mother Mother, who are making waves across Canada.…

The Comedy of Macbeth!

A week of filming, days of editing, uncounted popped braincells and hairs pulled out of my head... all to create this.

The Comedy of Macbeth was a production of the currently unnamed group of Masked Raccoons.

This may not have been great, but the next film will be. And the film after that. And the film after that.

The show is viewable on SYR's youtube account, or right here on this very site!

Be sure to check it out before we make better movies, become… Continue

Spartan Youth Radio's take on the Obama win.

Like Neil Armstrong walking on the moon, like the attack on New York and the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr., this generation will be asked by their kids: "where were you when Obama became president?" Students at Espanola High School gathered in the Spartan Youth Radio to watch live CBC streaming of the Presidential Inauguration of Barack Obama, the 44th President of the United States of America. These proud Canadians were enthusiastic and… Continue
