What You Talkin' About? (click here for answers to FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS)

Spartan Youth Radio is run by a group of students out of Espanola High School and provides an opportunity to create online audio programming about the issues
that concern them and the interests they share.

Over 40 students are currently involved in planning, writing, researching, recording and editing their own personal stories. Regular shows by students and staff include:
Metal Mayhem, Open Mic, Comedy Gourmet, Save Our Future and the Last True Punk Show. The podcast also features stories on local issues and interviews with
staff, students and celebrities such as Juno award winning blues rocker Derek Miller. "We have something for everyone," explains teacher advisor Jayson Stewart.
"Whatever you're interested in, we can build a show around it. If you're interested in movies, you can write a review. If environmental issues are your concern of choice,
you can do a documentary. Heavy metal is your thing, we've got a show for you. You're only limited by your creativity!
"

Spartan Youth Radio received start-up funds from the Rainbow District School Board's Innovation Fund but is now self-funded (in other words, "unfunded"). To raise funds,
the group has organized Halo and Guitar Hero tournaments and will launch a corporate sponsorship campaign in early 2008.

Q. How long have you been running the station?

After several months of planning, the first episode of Spartan Youth Radio was launched online on April 26th, 2007. We have been working nonstop since
then to make some of the hottest highschool audio programming.[top]

Q. I can't find you on my radio? What's the dillio?

Are you trying to listen to us on the RADIO? One of those old-fashioned contraptions that sits on our counter and makes sounds? Nah, that's not our thing. We're new
media, man! All of our audio is available ANYTIME, WORLDWIDE and, like digital television....REPEATABLE whenever you want it. Also, the cost of starting up
an air-waves based radio station is far too much for our school.[top]

Q. I've got a great idea for a show...what should I do?

You have a couple of options: tell us about it and we'll steal your idea and then make millions. Better yet, get your butt into the studio and do it yourself. We provide
all the training, all the help and all the equipment to take your idea, record it, edit it and post it online.[top]

Q. Why don't you play any music I know?

We would LOVE to play all the same music you hear EVERY day on EVERY radio station or downloaded from EVERY other site but, to be honest, to play the big names
without getting sued we would need to pay royalties and and we is flat broke, yo. Instead, we bring you the best independent, underground, on the edge tunage that we
can get legally, for free. That being said, a lot of what you like might be EXACTLY that kind of music, so let us know what you're into and we'll see what we can get
for free. Send us your music requests and we'll try to put them into a show.

If you're a band or a soloist, send us a demo CD or a digital copy of your music (.mp3 or .wav) and we'll use it in a show.[top]

Q. Why should I care about podcasting?

Podcasting gives you the ultimate power to escape the confines of a normal high school existence and let the ENTIRE WORLD know what you think, what you like, what
you hate and what you feel. We know that young people are often ignored by adults and aren't given the chance to show their individuality. Spartan Youth Radio is
your portal to the world. Don't let your generation be muzzled...speak out, shout out, rock out.[top]

Q. How can I get involved?

There are a bunch of ways you can get involved:

  • listen to every episode
  • tell everyone you know about this site
  • join our Facebook group page and make comments (then invite all your friends to join)
  • come by the studio and pick up a volunteer membership form (posted on the door)
  • come out to our special events and fundraisers
  • post the link to this page on every social network site, every blog, every chat room, and every gaming site that you know
  • think of ways to raise us some money (ask businessed to become sponsors, donate something, run an event for us, etc.)
  • buy some hot swag from our online store
  • hang out in our Listening Lounge at lunch[top]

Q. I want to win something...how do I get swag?

Every time you do something for Spartan Youth Radio (deliver flyers, give a show idea, put up posters, etc.) you get your name put into a draw. Every Friday we draw a
name to win a CD or a movie poster of your choice! And these aren't reject bin disks either...they're donated to us by a powerful member of the Toronto music elite.
You can also win chocolate too. Your choice.

Q. I have money and want to give it to you. Will you accept it?

Yes. Oui. Ja. Sì.

In other words, OF COURSE! We currently have no source of funding other than what we make through fundraisers and will always accept donations. Or, if you own
a business, we're always in need of corporate sponsorship. Consider become a FRIEND OF SPARTAN YOUTH RADIO.[top]

Q. I don't like any of your shows. What are you going to do about it?

Have you even LISTENED to the shows? Oh, you have and they're still not blowing you away? You're not easy to please. Well, Spartan Youth Radio is YOUR radio station
so if you don't like anything we've posted then, come in with an idea and we'll make exactly what you wanted. Ask the Metal Mayhem guys...they did the same thing and
now two of the three of them will be working in the studio this semester![top]

Q. What does the future look like for Spartan Youth Radio?

We're not even a year old and we now have an Executive Committee, are about to start playing music and episodes at lunch over the PA system, we've launched this site
and running the radio station will be it's own entire full-credit course next year![top]
